Home-made Doughnuts

Ingredients:

2 Cups Plain Flour

1/2 Cup Sugar

1 tsp Salt

1 Tbl Baking Powder

1/4 tsp Cinnamon

2 Tbl Softened Butter

1/2 Cup Milk

1 Egg, Beaten

Oil for Frying

Optional: Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture, or Icing Sugar to dust

Directions:
Mix together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon.

Add butter.

Then mix in egg and milk.  You can use an electric mixer for this, but I did it by hand.

While you are mixing, start heating your oil to 150C.  I just drop a small piece of batter in, and if the oil sizzles and bubbles gather around your batter yet it doesn’t burn, it’s ready.

Roll out on a floured surface until your dough is just under 1cm thick.

Then take a large glass to cut out your doughnut shape, and take a small lid like a milk bottle lid to cut a hole in the centre of each doughnut, giving you a traditional doughnut shape.

Prepare an area for your doughnuts to cool.  I put down a couple of plastic cutting boards with paper towel on top so I wouldn’t end up with an oily bench to clean up.
Drop the doughnuts into the hot oil.

Fry for about 1 minute on each side, or until they are golden brown.

Place them on your paper towels to cool, then toss them in cinnamon-sugar/icing sugar while they are still warm.

You could also glaze them or cover them in your favourite icing and add sprinkles.

Notes: Don’t forget to fry up your “holes” too. They cook very quickly and taste great. Once they are cooked put them in a paper bag with cinnamon and sugar and shake to coat.

And if you are cooking with the kids, make sure you send them out of the kitchen while you are frying the doughnuts, we don’t want any accidents with hot oil!
